A “Gem” in the New York City School System

The Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning School, "A School for a Sustainable City", is a NYC Outward Bound School (www.nycoutwardbound.org).  MELS opened in September of 2010 in a beautiful new campus on Metropolitan Avenue in District 28.  We serve grades 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12.  The Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning School offers all students a rigorous college preparatory program, with particular emphasis on sustainability.  MELS has been recognized as a Showcase School by the New York City Department of Education and one of ten Mentor Expeditionary Learning schools across the country.

MELS has been recognized both locally and nationally for our instruction and support for students, as well as for being one of the most diverse schools in New York City.  MELS was chosen to be a Showcase School in New York City and selected nationally as an EL Education Mentor School.  The school has been recognized in the New York Post as one of the “hidden gems” in the New York City public school system.  In addition to a 98% graduation rate since we have opened, our students have been accepted to a variety of prestigious schools and received national recognition and scholarships (including a National Merit Finalist).  As well as having several campus teams that have won city championships and providing a full range of athletic team, our award-winning Speech and Debate Team has placed students at the state and national competitions, our music students have been selected for the Queens Borough Orchestra, and several of our graduates have gone on to well-known programs in the arts.  Our teachers have won the city-wide Gaynor McGown Award and have been nominated for the Big Apple and Klingenstein Awards.

The school follows the Expeditionary Learning model (www.eleducation.org), in which students engage in learning expeditions and have multiple opportunities for hands-on learning, both inside and outside of the classroom. Students participate in fieldwork with civic leaders, industry figures, and environmental scientists to examine agriculture, architecture, city infrastructure, design, environmental policy, law, and planning.  Our graduates, through their examination of the principles of sustainability, will be equipped with the skills necessary to succeed in college and to guide the new decisions faced by our city and our world.
