Valerie was born in Queens and raised on Long Island. As the daughter of two NYC DOE educators she likes to believe education is in her blood.  Although she began her career as a photographer getting her MFA at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, she ultimately realized that her desire to contribute something meaningful was more powerful, and decided to become a NYC Teaching Fellow where she was able to gain her second Masters degree in Special Education.  Her years as a professional photographer also provided the means for a second certification in CTE as her love for art has never left.  She enjoys working with middle school students, teaching Social Studies and facilitating the afterschool art club.  She is excited to be part of the MELs community!
