Arthur is a Michigan native. As an undergraduate, he studied history and education at Saginaw Valley State University and studied abroad in Dún Laoghaire, Ireland. Upon graduation, he volunteered in the Peace Corps as an English Teacher Trainer in Ethiopia. During his two years of service, Arthur worked closely with teachers and students to accomplish a variety of projects related to English education, literacy, HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, gender empowerment, leadership, and life skills. During this time, he developed a more intimate understanding of social and economic inequalities in the world which prompted him to join Teach For America to serve in a high needs school. He taught 9th and 10th grade social studies in Detroit, MI while being an active member of the local Detroit chapter of Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ). He then completed his master’s degree at Michigan State University in K-12 Administration. Arthur continues to seek opportunities to deepen his understanding of inequality and to advocate for equity in education and beyond.
