Sarah Lasseron is proud to come from a French father and an American mother. She grew up in Paris and later moved to Washington, DC. As a result, she grew up bilingual and has always had a passion for languages. While in France, Sarah attended a German-French bilingual school, which later inspired her to pursue her B.A in German studies at Bard College. Upon graduating, she joined the Peace Corps where she served as an education volunteer in Rwanda. While in Rwanda, Sarah’s projects included building 2 different sets of libraries. She worked on building a library system in the school’s brand new library, which had been started by the previous volunteer. Along with other Peace Corps volunteers, she also partnered with the Education Development Center to spearhead their newest project of introducing Mobile Libraries in small Rwandan communities. She partnered with her host father, a prominent leader in her village, and the nearby community church to engage community members in participating and developing Books on the Move. Sarah’s host father continues to manage this library to this day and motivates community members, especially children, to read and borrow books. Sarah’s Peace Corps experience emboldened her desire to pursue teaching in the United States. When she returned, she joined the NYC Teaching Fellows program and began her journey as a special education provider. She graduated with an M.S Ed. in Adolescent Special Education from Hunter College. She joins MELS with several years of experience in Expeditionary Learning and teaching subjects like Math and Science. With languages being one of her passions, Sarah is really excited to further develop her teaching practice in an ELA classroom at MELS. When not at school, Sarah enjoys sports and remaining active. She plays soccer all year round (minus the winter), runs a total of 54 miles every month to honor her late father and winds down every Wednesday, doing yoga. She also enjoys making flower arrangements, discovering new parts of Brooklyn and spending quality time with the people she loves, including her dog.
