2020 Gaynor McCown Excellence in Teaching Award

Ms. Jyung, a 6th-grade math teacher and crew leader at MELS, has been selected as the recipient of NYC Outward Bound Schools’ 2020 Gaynor McCown Excellence in Teaching Award. It is an award that is given to recognize and celebrate a teacher from the NYCOB network whose teaching exemplifies excellence. Ms. Jyung is recognized for her ability to inspire students to achieve more than they thought possible while actively engaging them in learning.

The recipient must be nominated by their school with a body of evidence that is collected base on classroom observations, colleague recommendations, and student testimonials which is then submitted to New York City Outward Bound Schools. The recipient of the award is selected by NYCOB  from a pool of nominees from each NYCOB school and is awarded each year at the NYCOB gala in May.

jkMs. Jyung is known throughout the school for her ability to create a strong, tight-knit community within her Crew and classroom. Across the board, students commented that a relationship with Ms. Jyung was an “actual bond.” They stated that Ms. Jyung created relationships that didn’t seem like an obligatory “student-teacher” relationship, but that she genuinely cared about them.

A former crewie, a current 10th grader who was in Ms. Jyung’s crew in 6th and 7th grade, spoke about a time in which he left the school for almost a year: “When I left, she got everyone in the Crew together and they signed a shirt for me. She had our Crew get together to take a picture with me. I still have that shirt.”

Because of her positivity and kindness, one student said, “She taught me to see the good in everything.”  Another student affirmed, “She was always very kind. She was always the kindest person ever. She taught me that it’s really true that the respect you give to someone is the respect you get back.”

Once again we want to congratulate our outstanding teacher Ms.Jyung for all her hard work and all that she does to inspire students in and out of the classroom. Ms. Jyung is a role model for all our students sculpting successful and courageous mathematicians with an array of identities.

As a school, we appreciate Ms. Jyung and don’t know where we would be without her. She has created and continues to build our community and making us stronger than ever.  Changing lives and transforming students.

You are truly a gift to our community.
